Writing a great job application
How to fill in an application or write a short cover message that gets you noticed — even with little experience.
Read the advert first
Before you write anything, read the job advert twice and underline the words they repeat — “reliable”, “team”, “customer service”. These are the things they care about.
Your job is to show, with real examples, that you have those things — not just to say it.
Use their words
If the advert asks for someone “friendly and reliable”, use those exact words and back each one with a quick example: “I'm reliable — I had 100% attendance in my last year of college.”
Many employers (and their software) scan for the words from the advert, so mirroring them helps you get seen.
No experience? Use real life
You have more experience than you think. Helping at home, sport, gaming clans, volunteering, school projects and hobbies all show real skills — teamwork, commitment, organisation.
Example: “Captaining my five-a-side team taught me to stay calm under pressure and keep everyone motivated.”
Keep it short and check it
A short, clear message beats a long rambling one. Three or four tight sentences is plenty for a first message.
Always read it out loud once and check spelling — small mistakes make a big difference on a first impression.
